The Vineyards
Located in the Sonoma Valley at the foot of Sugar Loaf Ridge, Chateau St. Jean is a 250-acre estate with 90 acres planted to wine grapes. Selected from separate blocks planted in 1987 and also in 1996, the St. Jean Estate Cabernet Franc comprises 6.95 acres located on the benchland leading to the winery from the valley floor.
Winemaking
The Cabernet Franc was fermented and aged for 24 months in small French (100%) oak barrels (47% new). The best barrels were selected for this varietal bottling before the Cabernet Franc is used for blending in the Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon—a blend of the five Bordeaux varieties. To add complexity, 10% Merlot was added to the final blend.
Winetasting Comments
Aromas of ripe blueberries, violets and dark chocolate lift from the glass on this Cabernet Franc. Dense and highly extracted, this wine has a plush entry with well-integrated tannins, a richness of fruit and accents of black pepper and roasted coffee. Subtle notes of blueberry and roasted oak linger on the finish.
