2004 Chateau St Jean Reserve Merlot Sonoma County

2004 Chateau St Jean Reserve Merlot Sonoma County

Aromas of blueberry, cherry, plum and dried herbs burst from the glass of this Merlot. These bright fruit characters carry over onto the palate and mix with notes of blackberry, black tea, milk chocolate and spicy oak. A round and juicy mid-palate, with polished tannins, leads to a lush finish with cassis on the close.

About This Wine

The Vineyards
Chateau St. Jean’s Reserve wines are crafted by selecting the vineyard lots from throughout Sonoma County that offer the most generous fruit expression and the ability to age. Our estate vineyard in Kenwood comprises 47% of this blend. Located in the Sonoma Valley at the foot of Sugar Loaf Ridge, Chateau St. Jean is a 250-acre estate with 90 acres planted to wine grapes. Additional Merlot sourcing for this wine came from the Cornerstone Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Belle Terre Vineyard in Alexander Valley and the Malbec from the Asti Vineyard in northern Alexander Valley.

Tasting Notes
This Reserve wine consists of Merlot (86%) blended with Cabernet Sauvignon (8%) and Malbec (6%). Individual lots of each varietal were aged separately for two years in small, 100% French oak barrels (90% new) from select coopers. The first swirl unleashes aromas of black cherries, espresso, bittersweet chocolate and hints of spearmint from the glass. A rich, ripe entry taunts the mouth with complex layers of plums, black currants and roasted coffee beans that surround lush tannins and well balanced oak notes of roasted nuts and vanilla. This is a wine with tremendous structure, very accessible now but it is also built to age beautifully over the next few years. This is our “Petrus”! Liquid velvet in a bottle! Drink from 2010 to 2020.

Wine Advocate Robert Parker, Jr., December 31, 2008
A surprisingly strong effort…Sweet cola, mocha, black cherry fruit, and toasty oak aromas are followed by a ripe, medium to full-bodied, plump, juicy wine that should drink nicely for 7-8 years.
