The Vineyards
Located in the Sonoma Valley at the foot of Sugar Loaf Ridge, Chateau St. Jean is a 250-acre estate with 90 acres planted to wine grapes. Selected from separate blocks planted in 1987 and also in 1996, the St. Jean Estate Cabernet Franc comprises 6.95 acres located on the benchland leading to the winery from the valley floor.
Winemaking
The Cabernet Franc was fermented and aged for 26 months in small French (100%) oak barrels (37% new). The barrels that most exemplified the characteristics of our home vineyard were selected for this varietal bottling. To add complexity a small amount of Merlot (2%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%) were added to the final blend.
Winetasting Comments
Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and lavender lift from the glass on this inviting Cabernet Franc. The blueberry and boysenberry aromas follow through to the juicy palate along with sweet chocolate and baking spice flavors. The soft structure and fine grained tannins add to the complexity of the wine and allow for a lingering finish.
