The Vineyards
Located in the Sonoma Valley at the foot of Sugar Loaf Ridge, Chateau St. Jean is a 250-acre estate with 90 acres planted to wine grapes. Planted from 1988 to 1995, the St. Jean Estate Merlot comprises 24 acres of benchland fruit.
Winemaking
96% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec were fermented and aged separately for 28 months in small 100% French oak barrel (62% new). The Merlot lots that highlight the true character of the vineyard are selected and then blended with specific lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec to produce the final wine.
Winetasting Comments
Bursting with aromas of blueberry cobbler, plum and black licorice, this elegant Merlot delivers just the right amount of dark fruit flavors, roundness and fine-grained tannins. Layers of mint chocolate and ripe plum complement the wine’s balanced structure and lead to a long finish with blackberry jam and spice notes.
