Since its inception in 1999, this 8555 cuvee pays homage to our home and our winery address here in the Sonoma Valley. This winemaker’s choice red blend allows us to source and select the best grape varietals grown in Sonoma County, to showcase what we believe is a true representation of the special terroir available to us on our doorstep.
"The 2015 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty Five Fifty Five is blended of 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 18% Malbec, 15% Petit Verdot, 14% Merlot and 5% Syrah, aged 26 months in 36% new French oak. Very deep purple-black in color, it gives up crushed red and black currants, black cherries and mulberries with hints of bay leaves, cigar box and damp soil. The palate is full bodied, firm and grainy with lovely freshness cutting through the intense layers, finishing long and chewy." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 2018
Each offering of this unique reserve blend shows a distinct personality, influenced by the selection of varietal, growing region and the vintage. An intense aroma of toffee and caramel offer the first hint that this powerful, expressive wine is a memorable expression and representation of Sonoma County in vintage 2015.Dark fruits led by black currants, wild blackberries, black cherry, ripe plums and notes of milk chocolate and mocha give way to evident tannins and a rich, full mouthfeel. Oak spice, cedar and a notably long finish confirm this bold wine will prove to gain further complexity over the next 7-10 years.
The 2015 growing season was another beautiful vintage with mild temperatures and no weather upsets throughout. The season got off to an early start in the spring and continued through to an early start of harvest with dry and uniform weather. The resulting grapes, although overall yields were slightly down, were of very high quality.
First offered in 1999, this red blend is a tribute to our Sonoma Valley home, and the label is actually our address on the Sonoma Highway. Our long history in Sonoma County is reflected here, with each vintage allowing for a blend which is both a tribute to the vintage and the varied growing regions within Sonoma County. In 2015, the blend is predominantly Sonoma Valley (48%) and Dry Creek Valley (36%) with additional contributions from Alexander Valley, Los Carneros and nearby Moon Mountain. Exceptional Reserve lots that showcase the terroir of each region are carefully selected, aged separately and then assembled into a master blend allowed to rest and gain complexity prior to bottling.
This cuvee is led by Cabernet Sauvignon (26%) and Cabernet Franc (22%),along with Malbec (18%), Petit Verdot (15%), Merlot (14%) and Syrah (5%).Each component was aged separately for 26 months in 100% French oak barrels, of which 36% was new oak. After bottling, the wine was allowed to rest for an additional six months prior to release.
Margo Van Staaveren’s has been Winemaker for Chateau St. Jean since 2003 and has worked at the winery for over 40 harvests. She was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast magazine in 2008. During her long tenure with the winery, Margo has played a pivotal role in every facet of the winemaking process. As winemaker, she makes the final decisions involving blend and style to produce consistently high quality wines in the super premium and luxury category.
