This winemaker’s choice red blend allows us to source and select the best grape varietals grown in Sonoma County, to showcase what we believe is a true representation of the special terroir available to us on our doorstep.
“The 2016 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty Five Fifty Five is a blend of 26% Malbec, 23% Merlot, 18% Syrah, 18% Petit Verdot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes charging out of the gate with rambunctious blackberry preserves, baked plums and Black Forest cake notes plus hints of cracked black pepper, smoked meats and black olives with some spice box in the background. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling black berry preserves and savory layers, framed by firm, rounded tannins and finishing on a lingering peppery note. 645 cases were made.”Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 13th, 2020
”The 2016 Eighty-Five Fifty-Five Reserve Red Blend, the second wine of the flagship Cinq Cépages, is fabulous in 2016. Deep, rich and resonant in the glass, the Eighty-Five Fifty-Five captures all of the richness of the Cinq, but is also quite rich, which makes it a real pleasure to taste today. Chocolate, leather, cedar, tobacco and spice wrap around a core of dark cherry/plum fruit. The 2016 is fabulous.”
Each Eighty-Five Fifty-Five release is a unique expression of the year, and the terroir of it’s individual components. On the nose, intense aromas of plum and dried cherry lead to incredible notes of caramel, vanilla, and baking spice. On the palate, dark fruit flavors arrive quickly with plum, black cherry, and dried currants showing strongest. Secondary notes follow of milk chocolate, mocha, and a sweet note of toffee. On the finish, cedar lingers with a long lingering finish of vanilla and crème de cassis. This wine will gain even further complexity if you chose to age it over the next 10-15 years.
This cuvée is a blend of six grape varieties including Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each component of this wine is aged separately for 27 months in 100% French Oak Barrels (23% new). Each barrel is rated by its quality and then finally blended into a cuvée. This cuvée is then bottled and left to rest in the bottle for an additional six months prior to release. This helps the wine’s flavors integrate and gives a little bit of age and maturity to this incredibly rich wine.
Margo Van Staaveren’s has been Winemaker for Chateau St. Jean since 2003 and has worked at the winery for over 40 harvests. She was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast magazine in 2008. During her long tenure with the winery, Margo has played a pivotal role in every facet of the winemaking process. As winemaker, she makes the final decisions involving blend and style to produce consistently high quality wines in the super premium and luxury category.
