Hypnotic aromas of bittersweet chocolate and black cherries lead to a plush entry filled with notes of blackberry, raspberry and hints of freshly ground coffee. A wine with solid structure, this Reserve Merlot is highly accessible at release time, and is built to age gracefully with cellaring.

Bottle Size: 1.5 L
Bottles in Case: 6

Winemakers Note:

This Reserve wine consists of Merlot (84%) blended with Malbec (9%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (2%). Individual lots of each varietal were aged separately for three years in small, 100% French oak barrels (100% new) from select coopers. After 36 months of oak aging, barrel by barrel, each lot was tasted and the most outstanding barrels were selected and blended.

Vineyard Note:

The Reserve wines from Chateau St. Jean are styled to showcase the best of Sonoma County. Our estate vineyard in Kenwood comprises 40% of this blend. Located in the Sonoma Valley at the foot of Sugar Loaf Ridge, Chateau St. Jean is a 250-acre estate with 90 acres planted to wine grapes. Planted from 1988-1995, the St. Jean Estate Merlot comprises 24 acres of bench land fruit while the St. Jean Estate Cabernet Franc (5%) is located just in front of the Chateau and the Petit Verdot (2%) is located on the mountain behind the winery. Additional sourcing for this wine came from the Cornerstone Vineyard in the Russian River and the Asti Vineyard in Alexander Valley.
