Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren

Chateau St. Jean makes its home in the heart of Sonoma, a region of dramatic diversity perfect for growing a wide variety of exceptional grapes. The Alexander Valley is one of Sonoma's oldest and warmest winegrowing regions with unique topography, climate and soils perfect for growing Malbec. This wine exhibits generous fruit flavors of blackberry, currant and notes of warm spice - all unique characteristics of the Alexander Valley.

90 Points - Wine Advocate

“Containing 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 18 months in 25% new French oak, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Malbec Alexander Valley delivers bold, expressive crushed blackberries and warm plums notes with hints of wild sage, violets and black pepper with a waft of kirsch/red fruit. Medium to full bodied, firm and velvety, it delivers plenty of perfumed, spicy layers with great length.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, October 2018

Tasting Notes

Intensely deep garnet-purple in color with vibrant aromas of fresh blackberry compote and ripe plum. Inviting aromas of sage, pepper spice and floral notes lead to a plush mid-palate with a juicy dark berry fruit core with flavors of plum, bright boysenberry and kirsch. The wine has a firm structure with well-balanced acidity giving it lift. The wine offers a long and exceedingly flavorful finish.

Vineyard Notes

Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren has championed Malbec and believes the variety flourishes in Sonoma County at selected sites.  It has become one of herfavorite varieties to work with and bottle. The Malbec for this wine comes from Asti Vineyard Block17C (40%), Asti Block 14A2 (30%) and Barr Vineyard (20%).  The Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone 4, was sourced from Asti Block 1C and 1E.

Vintage Notes

The 2015 growing season was another beautiful vintage with mild temperatures and no weather upsets throughout. The season got off to an early start in the spring and continued through to an early start of harvest with dry and uniform weather.  The resulting grapes, although overall yields were slightly down, were of very high quality.  The Malbec fruit enjoyed the moderate temperatures the season offered as well as the bright sunshine over the course of the dry summer. The resulting fruit that came into the winery had deep color, concentrated flavors and ripe tannins.

Winemaking Notes

The 2015 Alexander Valley Malbec was blended with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) to round out the final blend. The Malbec was aged for 18 months exclusively in small French oak barrels (25% new). Following aging, the wine was assembled, bottled and allowed to rest in the bottle before release.
