To craft our Reserve Chardonnay, we harvest fruit from such outstanding Sonoma County vineyards as Robert Young (54%), Cold Creek (26%), Durell (12%) and Belle Terre (8%). Each vineyard lot remains separate as it is fermented in small French oak barrels and aged sur-lie for 18 months. We select individual barrels of the best lots for the final blend. Our 2015 vintage yields bright aromas and flavors of lemon and creme brulee with a velvety texture and rich finish. 

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Chateau St. Jean Reserve Chardonnay offers complex aromas of Meyer lemon, fresh ginger, toasted almonds and baking spice. The nose rings true on the palate with layered flavors of Crenshaw melon, lemon curd and hints of brioche toast.  The well structured wine is broad and balanced with a warm, rich texture and vibrant acidity. The long, flavorful finish shows a classic lemon verbena flavor that is a hallmark for the Sonoma County Reserve Chardonnay.

Vineyard Notes

Chateau St. Jean’s Reserve wines are crafted by selecting the vineyard lots from throughout Sonoma County that offer the most generous fruit expression and the ability to age.  The 2015 Sonoma County Reserve Chardonnay is our 18th vintage of this wine.  For this blend, we selected fruit from the critically acclaimed Robert Young Vineyard (60%) in the Alexander Valley and Cold Creek Ranch (20%) in the Sonoma Coast appellation along with supporting fruit from, Durell Vineyard (11%) in Sonoma Valley and finally, Belle Terre Vineyard (9%) also in the Alexander Valley. 

Vintage Notes

The 2015 growing season was another beautiful vintage with mild temperatures and no weather upsets throughout. The season got off to an early start in the spring and continued through to an early start of harvest with dry and uniform weather.  The resulting grapes, although overall yields were slightly down, were of very high quality.

Winemaking Notes

Classic winemaking techniques such as sur lie aging for 17 months are used for this wine.  Each lot is kept separate throughout the winemaking process and aged in 100% French oak (43% new). Specific barrels are selected from each lot to craft the final blend.  Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren prefers to give the Reserve Chardonnay a year of bottle age before it’s released.
