Vintage 2015
Wine Type Red
Varietal Pinot Noir
Region Sonoma Valley
Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren

The grapes for this Pinot Noir were hand-picked from the celebrated Durell Vineyard located in the Sonoma Valley. The wine exhibits dense black fruit, cherry and spicy flavors with a smooth velvety texture.

Tasting Notes

This distinctive single vineyard Pinot Noir is a lovely dark ruby red with expressive aromas of red currant, cassis, orange peel and sweet spices. Secondary aromas offer more exotic, earthy notes such as black tea and mushroom, hinting at the layers of complexity and depth found in this gorgeous Pinot Noir. The palate is soft and silky with a bright core of red fruits like raspberry and cranberry, followed up by a black tea spice note on the finish.  The wine is incredibly well-balanced with fine tannins and even acidity leaving a long, flavorful finish making it the perfect food-friendly offering.

Vineyard Notes

Located in the southwestern foothills of Sonoma Valley in the cool Carneros region, the Durell Vineyard receives the cooling breezes and morning fog from the nearby San Pablo Bay and Pacific Ocean. This wine is exclusively composed of Dijon clone 777. The parcel is on an exposed ridgeline where it prospers from the thin soil and coastal influences. The Pinot Noir from this vineyard has great fruit intensity, balance and structure.

Vintage Notes

The 2015 growing season was another beautiful vintage with mild temperatures and no weather upsets throughout. The season got off to an early start in the spring and continued through to an early start of harvest with dry and uniform weather.  The resulting grapes, although overall yields were slightly down, were of very high quality.

Winemaking Notes

After primary fermentation, the wine was drained from the skins and sent to barrel the next day.  Malolactic fermentation occurred in the barrels and lasted for a month.  We were able to retain all of the fruit character from the vineyard and develop richness and integration with the oak components.  The wine was aged in French oak for 16 months before the final blend was assembled and bottled.
