Vintage 2016
Wine Type White
Varietal Fume Blanc
Region Alexander Valley
Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren
The Lyon Vineyard is located in the most northern part of the Alexander Valley, adjacent to the Russian River, where the cool breezes produce Sauvignon Blanc with luscious melon, stone fruit and citrus blossom aromas and flavors. A touch of oak influence adds hints of warm spice while still retaining the wine's bright acidity.

Tasting Note

This  rare  single  vineyard  Fumé  Blanc  boasts  fragrant  aromas  of  stone  fruits,  lemon  citrus peel and hints of green tea. The wine is fresh and refined, almost delicate, and very elegant with a flavorful palate of white peach and kiwi fruit. The wine is balanced by a racy core of acidity, adding notes of minerality, and a crisp, clean finish.

Vineyard Note

The Lyon Vineyard is located in the most northern part of the Alexander Valley, adjacent to the Russian River. Chateau St. Jean has a long term relationship with grower Mark Lyon that dates back to 1980. We launched this single-vineyard Fumé Blanc with the 2006 vintage.

Vintage Note

The extended drought caused concern as the 2016 growing season began, but welcomed winter rain hinted at the relief to come. After a relatively dry January significant rainfall arrived in February, along with mild temperatures. Bud break was early, but was slowed by heavy April showers. A traditionally sized harvest followed the lighter vintage of 2015, and the extended mild season helped balance the acids and add complexity to the fruit.

Winemaking Note

The majority of the wine (89%) was tank fermented to retain the fresh, forward fruit flavors that are indicative of this vineyard. The balance of the blend (11%) was barrel fermented in French oak. The barrel portion was aged sur lie for nine months to add texture and creaminess.
